marijuana news round-up

Is this really it? Could the MORE Act go through, and federally legalize cannabis in the United States? From hype about Delta-10 synthetic THC to a legal battle in Colorado to prevent soft prohibition and massive amendments to cannabis laws, we’ve got the herbal tea and your marijuana news round-Up for July 16th, 2021.

House Leader Chuck Schumer Gets Lined Up to Decriminalize and Tax Weed

New York Senator and House Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would get it done. He has always advocated for treating cannabis like other controlled substances like alcohol or tobacco. Regulate it. Keep it out of the hands of minors. And tax it. Because boy, could the federal government use the tremendous revenue injection that a national tax on every retail cannabis sale would provide.

The much anticipated Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (co-authored by Vice President Kamala Harris) has an outline of what federal taxation would look like. And it is actually a staggered or tiered taxation system that slowly introduces a federal tax on cannabis sales (medical and recreational).

Want to see how the decriminalization plan would be executed? Or how much federal tax we would be paying on cannabis products at dispensaries?

What Is Delta-10 THC? Still Federally Illegal According to the DEA

A new kind of Delta has been making the news; Delta-10 THC. You’ve heard about Delta-8 and Delta-9 synthetic cannabinoids, so what exactly is Delta-10? It is made from hemp CBD isolate, and because of that, advocates say it should be legal according to the federal 2018 Farm Bill.

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and made public statements saying it’s not legal. And still counts as cannabis, even if it is synthetic. The DEA statement read: “All synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols remain schedule I controlled substances.” Delta-10 will also show up on a urine analysis like other sources of organic or synthetic THC.

Can Delta-10 get you high? Yep. But it is different from Delta-8 or Delta-8 THC. Some people have said that Delta-8 psychoactive effects feel more like an Indica, while Delta-10 has uplifting and energetic traits similar to a Sativa.

It has been described in marijuana news as providing euphoria, improved memory, and focus. And with none of the paranoia and increased anxiety that some people report after using Delta-9 THC.

Is Delta-10 Safe to Use?

The answer is “we don’t know”. Because it is synthetic and an extract, some tests of Delta THC products have revealed heavy metals and toxic chemicals. They can be from solvents used in the extraction process.

One of the DEA’s primary concerns (other than THC in general) is that many of the ‘herbal’ compounds found in Delta synthetics are imported. Additives that make people feel like the ‘herbal cannabis’ is healthier because it may contain:

  • Blue Egyptian water lily
  • Indian warrior
  • Lion’s tail
  • Indian lotus
  • Honeyweed

In some cases where synthetic THC has been tested, it has contained deadly, toxic chemicals. Unlike CBG and Delta-9 THC (which occur naturally in the cannabis plant) Delta-8 and Delta-10 do not. They are chemical compounds made by humans, not derived from the cannabis plant.

6 Celebs Who Surprisingly Smoke Weed

Some people are ultra-private about using cannabis. Or at least, they were until states legalized both medical and adult use. What is interesting is learning about celebrities who you would never guess use cannabis. Because they don’t seem like “the type”.

But is there really a “type” anymore? Or just people using cannabis to help address symptoms and live a better quality of life.

We’ve found six celebs that you wouldn’t associate with cannabis use. And share some video clips that discuss the medicinal value they get from using weed. As well as how often they use it, and why it works for them, with quotes that made the marijuana news.

NORML Supports Patient Plaintiff in Suit to Stop New Colorado Cannabis Restrictions

Medical marijuana was legalized in Colorado in the year 2000. Amendment 64 in 2012 allowed cannabis to be sold to patients in dispensaries. And by 2015, Colorado had also legalized adult-use (recreational) weed. The state enjoys cannabis tourism and a reputation as being a great place to live. After all, the elevation isn’t the only way for you to get high in Colorado.

So when you hear about a rollback of cannabis laws, Colorado might be the last state you would think of. Because they seem to be responsibly libertarian about cannabis. But over seven years have passed since the first Coloradian purchased a THC product in a dispensary. And the medical community is raising some alarms, and legislative muscle, to put new controls in place.

Concentrates are the primary focus of legislative reform. And tightening the loopholes around ‘looping’ in Colorado. Or visiting multiple dispensaries to buy over the limit of cannabis products. If passed it will make it more difficult for patients aged 18-20 years to qualify for a medical card.

The new law would require (2) physicians to provide a referral or recommendation for medical cannabis for patients aged 18-20. And it would also require every doctor to ‘prescribe’ according to a formal treatment plan for every registered patient in Colorado.

A medical card holder and patient, 19-year-old plaintiff Benjamin Wan, has filed suit against the state of Colorado. Even though HB 1317 has already been passed, signed by Gov. Jared Polis, and is due to start in January 2022.
