California became the ninth state to allow K-12 students to take medical marijuana in school. The California law requires that a prescription be on file at the school, and that a parent administer the marijuana, which cannot be in smokable or vapable form, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The law, “Jojo’s Act,” is named after a teenager with severe epilepsy who takes medicinal cannabis to block seizures. Most Republican lawmakers opposed the bill, because of concerns that it would lead to abuse, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Other states that allow students to take medical cannabis on school grounds include Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Washington.
